WE MUST KEEP JOBS IN U.S
Date: June 2, 1999
To: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
In 1996, Pat Buchanan, while speaking about American trade policy, asked a vital question: What are we
doing to our own people?
The recent transfer of Master Lock Co. jobs from Milwaukee to Mexico should make the question all the
more important. What, indeed, are we doing to our own people when we encourage companies to ship
good jobs to Mexico?
What are we doing when NAFTA makes it so profitable for corporations to abdicate responsibility to
their own workers and their own country and exploit Mexican workers? How many more jobs will we
give up? How much more of our manufacturing base will we allow to be shipped out of the country?
It's time to say enough is enough. It's time to stand up and support political candidates who are not afraid
to fight for fair trade policies. After all, what kind of nation are we if we refuse to start taking care of
American workers and American families by keeping American jobs in this country?
