RELIGIOUS CONSERVATIVES NEED TO UNITE WITH BUCHANAN

I believe Dr. James Dobson and your editorial staff have totally missed
the main point of Cal Thomas and Pastor Ed Dobson's book "Blinded by
Might". Political activism by believers in and of itself is not the issue -- political activism by believers when done instead of spreading the gospel is.
This is a fine point that both you and Dr. Dobson seem to have missed.
The pertinent question to ask is "What would Jesus do"? Our Saviour never told us to
make religious conservatives of all nations. When His followers wanted to
march against Rome, He instead went to the cross and we have to also.
We are
skipping the necessary foundational steps when we continue to beat our
culture with a conservative stick instead of showing them the light of the
gospel. How much time must be wasted using the same old tactics before
the religious right sees the light?
If the culture war is lost as many have said, then no amount of
campaigning for candidates -- from presidential to school board -- in our
present system is going to change a thing. As you well know, most people
believe what the Ted Turner/Ruppert Murdoch/Disney controlled media is
telling them. So how do you plan to get through to them? Unless you have
the kind of money the media moguls have it won't happen.
What we need is a cultural
revolution and the only thing powerful enough to do that is the gospel --
just think back on what it has done in your own life. I know it is easier
to be political than to spread the gospel for I was there myself for many
years, but we must follow the Great Commission given us by our Saviour and
not the evangelical-political movement of the day being pushed by Dr.
Dobson, Rev. Falwell or anyone else.
Besides, if religious conservatives really wanted to win the White House
they would urge the Alan Keyes', Gary Bauer's and Steve Forbe's of the
world to withdraw from the race and throw their money and support behind
Pat Buchanan. Longer than anyone, Pat has been the most outspoken on the relevant issues, and the closest one to actually winning the nomination.
In closing, I was tempted to have my subscription canceled after reading that
you ended your association with Cal Thomas simply because he no longer
espoused your view of political activism, but that would make me no better
than you. Keep the issues coming and please reconsider your decision to
drop Cal Thomas. I've added a name on a button I picked up at the
1996 Republican National Convention. It now reads "Let Pat and Cal Speak".
