THE BELTWAY ELITE VS. MIDDLE AMERICA
Date: June 30, 1999
To: Bucks County Courier Times - bhenderson@calkinsnewspapers.com
In Sunday, June 13th's Bucks County Courier Times, Congressman Jim
Greenwood says he has seen the future, and its name is George W. Bush.
With such thinking, he should be reminded of the GOP's performance in the
last two presidential elections.
Congressman Greenwood said, "we've lost the White House twice in a row."
That is true, and he can expect to lose it for a third time if we nominate
George W. Bush, and for virtually the same reasons. Then, the two party
candidates agreed on 99% of the issues, and the Republicans were too timid
to advance a clear agenda that differentiated themselves from Clinton and
Gore. What was the end result? This forced millions into the arms of Ross
Perot and the Reform Party, the U. S. Taxpayers Party, and millions more simply
did not vote when the GOP failed to give them a clear alternative to Bill
Clinton.
George W. Bush has stated that we need to lay off immigration, when the
majority of Americans want immigration reform. He claims he is pro-life
but he is willing to abandon the issue because the polls show Americans
find the issue too divisive. How will this "compassionate conservatism"
rally the Republican Parties conservative base? Very simply, it will not.
On the contrary, Pat Buchanan advances issues that strike a cord with
middle Americans, and he does not change his views to suit the polls or
the political elite.
Congressman Greenwood also said Pat Buchanan "doesn't have a broad
perspective." The Buchanan message resonates across party lines and has
the ability to bring back the Perot voters and Reagan Democrats and build
a populist and conservative coalition to win the White House. Buchanan
attracts crowds that are a cross section of America, factory workers,
lawyers, students, throngs of middle class people who are looking for
leadership.
The Republican Party would do well to look at its past mistakes, its loss
in the House, failure in the last two presidential elections and devise a
new strategy. George W. Bush will keep the Republican establishment in
tact, but that is not what Americans need or want. Pat Buchanan offers a
clear distinction from the beltway elites, he speaks for middle America,
and he is ready to be President.
