It was a most unusual live radio interview late yesterday
afternoon, as syndicated talk show host Oliver North chatted it
up with Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, who
was rolling down an Iowa highway in a campaign car driven by
a local volunteer.
When who should suddenly appear but an Iowa state trooper,
pulling Mr. Buchanan's car over for speeding.
As the trooper walked up the car, Mr. Buchanan rolled down
his window and asked the officer if he would like to speak with
Ollie North. He then handed the phone to the trooper.
"I'm fine, Mr. North, how are you?" the trooper was heard
saying over the Radio America network.
"I sure hope you're going to be kind to my friend, Pat," Mr.
North said.
"I will be very kind, we have to help the cause, don't we?"
the trooper replied.
The trooper then wrote Mr. Buchanan's driver, an Iowa
native, a warning ticket, gave him directions to the next
Buchanan campaign event, "urged us to cool it down a little bit,
and then congratulated me on my [NH] straw poll victory," Mr.
Buchanan noted.
"You did a wonderful job as my counselor, Ollie!" the
candidate added.
