Letter from Pat Buchanan to Reformers August 3, 2000

In the next few days we will convene at Long Beach, and face decisions crucial to my candidacy for president but no less crucial to the future of our Reform Party. As your party’s standard bearer, I will, of course, campaign on the issues closest to my heart, issues for which I have fought in the journalism and politics for a decade: A fair trade policy that puts American workers first, immigration reform, political and campaign finance reform, a non-interventionist foreign policy, and full restoration of the sovereignty of the United States. These have all been subjects of major campaign speeches I have given in the past year. I am also, as you know, strongly pro-life and committed to appointing justices who reflect my views. I recognize that many of you in the Reform Party, who have devoted years of effort to building this party into a force that can seriously challenge the Beltway duopoly, are not with me on all of these issues. Some of you may be with me on only one or two. For those of you who are not “Buchananites” (at least not yet) I want to make a particular point about the Reform Party: It is vital to the country that this party grow beyond the year 2000. But, to do so, it must do well in this presidential election. It needs Buchanan supporters -- they have provided tremendous service in gathering signatures to get our party on the ballot in all fifty states we are still on track to make it -- but it also needs all the faithful members of the Reform Party who were here before we came. There is in this party room not only for any good American who wishes to join, but also there is room in our campaign this fall for all of you who want to help. Indeed, I will be asking for that help. Moreover, I will do all in my power to ensure that the Reform Party remains a house in which there are many mansions, a house large enough for all who are committed to its growth and success to live within it. This party will grow, inevitably, beyond my candidacy; it will take a shape and form that cannot now be foreseen. But I pledge this: As your candidate, I will use my influence to ensure that its internal procedures and processes are fair and democratic, that it remains open to new political perspectives, that it welcomes all of your energy and all of your contributions.
