BUCHANAN DENOUNCES BUSH'S
SOFT MONEY SHAKE-DOWN
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Today, Presidential candidate Patrick J. Buchanan released the following statement:
"Tonight, George W. Bush is headlining a soft money pig-out at the National Guard Armory where the GOP is expected to rake in $18 million from Beltway lobbyists to help recapture Congress and purchase the Presidency of the United States.
"The big donor feast exposes the hollowness - indeed the hilarity - of the Governor's claim, made in February in the heat of his contest with Senator McCain: 'I am for banning soft money... I am for complete reform.'
"Two months later, as Bush and the GOP leaders shake down special interests for $18 million, we must ask what public policy that money is buying. Is it meant to purchase Congress' embrace of a trade deal that ships American jobs abroad and sustains a brutal regime in Beijing? Will it ensure that a Bush administration will put corporate concerns ahead of the national interest?
"Next month, the Gore campaign will try to outdo Bush with its own soft money bash. Whoever wins the race for special interest cash, America's democracy and the American people end up the losers."
