BUCHANAN DECRIES SUPREME COURT SCHOOL PRAYER DECISION Calls Verdict “Assault on Religious
Foundations of American life”
VIENNA, VA – Today, Presidential
candidate Patrick J. Buchanan released the
following statement:
“The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to
ban student-led prayer before sporting events
is an escalation in the contemptible assault on
the religious and moral foundations of
American life. In the last few months, judicial
elites have ruled that the Ohio state seal,
which stated ‘With God All Things are
Possible’ is unconstitutional, and that in
Cleveland vouchers may not be used for
religious schools. Now, the High Court has
ruled, in plain violation of the will of the state,
that a student-led invocation before a football
game violates the Constitution.
“This interpretation would astound
and alarm America’s Founding Fathers, who
always recognized the favors Almighty God
had bestowed upon this nation, and never
believed that religious expression should be
banished to the corners of the this nation’s
life.
“In his dissent, Justice Rehnquist
remarked upon the ‘hostility to all things
religious in public life’ which permeated the
Court’s decision. I would add that the impulse
to banish religion, and especially the symbols
of Christianity, from the public regions of
American life, is really part of a tiny elite’s
broader agenda of dismantling American
traditional morality, which can only lead to the
most tragic consequences for American
family life and for the nation’s future.”
