BUCHANAN HAILS CONGRESS FOR RECLAIMING WAR-MAKING POWER
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA--Yesterday's vote in the United States Congress marks the
beginning of the end of the diversion of American military power to
advance the Clinton-Gore utopian vision of a New World Order.
The House refused to back a President who six weeks ago declared an
illegal war, and rightfully reclaimed its constitutional authority over
war and peace by prohibiting the President from deploying ground troops in
Kosovo.
Clearly, the President of the United States should not and must not commit
U.S. ground forces to this conflict. He lacks the support of the
Congress; he lacks the support of the American people. He leads a NATO
alliance that is deeply divided, having pursued a flawed strategy that has
destabilized the Balkans, antagonized the Russian people and nation, and
ushered in a human rights catastrophe in Kosovo.
Despite almost six weeks of war and billions of our tax dollars,
Milosevic's ground forces, according to General Wesley Clark, are as
strong as they were when the bombing began. Over a million Kosovar
Albanians have been displaced and left homeless. Mindlessly, we have
bombed Yugoslavia back to the 1950s while we have openly discussed a
Marshall Plan to rebuild her.
The Senate should now complement and complete the action of the House.
