Background: At peak, General Electric employed 1,800 workers to manufacture residential electric meters in Somersworth, NH. General Electric laid-off 118 workers in October 1998, 45 workers in February 1999, and this month announced 130 additional layoffs by year's end - while expanding operations at Industrias Unidas, S.A. in Pateje, Mexico.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, General Electric has exported nearly 3,200 jobs overseas and ranks second in NAFTA-related job layoffs nationwide.
