BUCHANAN TO CLINTON: WELCOME TO THE CULTURE WAR
NEW YORK, NY -- Today, Republican Presidential candidate Patrick J.
Buchanan released the following statement:
"President Clinton's call for a joint FTC-Justice Department investigation
of the correlation between the entertainment industry's romanticization of
raw violence and the epidemic of school massacres is overdue.
"At long last, perhaps, Hollywood is ceasing to be a privileged sanctuary,
exempt from any accountability for its pivotal role in poisoning and
polluting America's popular culture. It has long been the height of
hypocrisy for beneficiaries of Hollywood campaign cash to contend that Joe
Camel causes teen smoking, but films like 'Natural Born Killers' have no
connection to teen slaughters.
"Citing ads for video games that promise 'more fun that shooting your
neighbor's cat' and urge players to 'get in touch with your gun-toting
cold- blooded murdering side,' Mr. Clinton declared: 'Our children are
being fed a dependable daily dose of violence and it sells.'
"Exactly. As the Bible teaches, of those to whom much is given, much is
asked. The First Amendment is not a suicide pact; and if Hollywood is
using its monopoly power over America's popular culture to poison
children, that power should be taken away from those who have exploited
and abused it.
"The detoxification of American culture is a first step toward restoring a
country that is as good as she is great. For one brief moment, yesterday,
Mr. Clinton joined the camp of the saints in the culture war for the soul
of America."
